Skill Pillar

Defense

Defense is the art of denying time and space. Smart defenders control gaps, angle attackers to low-danger areas, and break the puck out with poise.

Snapshot

Definition

Defensive excellence combines skating, stick detail, and anticipation. You dictate where attackers go, separate them from the puck, and transition play with control.

Key Behaviors

  • Maintains tight gap
  • Sticks on puck lane
  • Wins net-front body position
  • Angles to support
  • Shoulder checks on retrievals
  • Clean first pass on breakout

Gap Standard

Neutral zone gap should be one stick length by the red line. Track how often you meet that mark—use video or bench feedback.

Training Blueprint

Skating & Footwork

  • Run “C-cut retreats” focusing on quick pivots and crossovers back to the middle.
  • Add slide & seal drills—shuffle then angle to the wall while staying square.
  • Practice mohawks and quick escapes to beat forecheck pressure.

Stick & Body Detail

  • Mirror partner drills to keep blade on puck and body on body.
  • Net-front wrestling: 3-second battles, reset quickly.
  • Backside pressure reps—stick lift, body seal, bump to support.

Breakout Execution

  • Use shoulder-check cadence: before puck, when touching, and before passing.
  • Practice three retrieval options: wheel, reverse, quick up—call your choice out loud.
  • Track breakout success rate (tape-to-tape exit) every game.

Peer Review Checklist

Give to your D partner or goalie to evaluate.

  • First contact is stick-on-puck before body.
  • Communicates switches and net-front coverage loudly.
  • Wins at least 70% of corner retrievals cleanly.
  • Moves feet through the blue line instead of gliding.
  • Gets puck off the glass or tape in under three seconds.
